We in Maine should be proud that we are recognized nationally for having one of the most open and responsive election systems in the country.

We enjoy high voter turnout, Election Day registration, a paper trail requirement guaranteeing votes are counted and the Clean Elections system, which limits the influence of special-interest money on our elected officials. We are the envy of many.

In 1996, Maine voters correctly saw the wisdom of taking control of the political system and ratified our landmark Clean Election Act. By 2004, almost 80 percent of the candidates for the Legislature ran without corporate, special-interest or private donations. The cost to us: less than $2 per eligible voter per year.  Portland Press Herald
